Roller & Compactor Container Shipping

Single-drum, padfoot and pneumatic rollers dismantled and packed for export

  • 10–14 t class
  • Drums chocked through the floor
  • Three units per shipment

Rollers packed by machinery specialists

Rollers look simple to ship until you consider what a padfoot steel drum does to a wooden container floor. Without proper floor protection or loading technique, the drum can punch holes straight through the floor, leading to a costly repair bill at the other end. This is why we typically ship most rollers from Australia as RoRo cargo: their low volume and decent weight make them ideal cargo.

However, when moving multiple units (10–14 t size) to locations like Vietnam, where container freight is negligible, it makes complete sense to pack them inside containers. The issue is that most rollers in Australia have enclosed cabs, which typically need to be removed from the chassis. This makes loading two complete units per 40’ HC very difficult, as the detached cab takes up considerable space in the container. That’s why we recommend consolidating three rollers per shipment, so the detached cabs fill the vacant space in the second container.

To make things more difficult, brands like Dynapac have cabs welded into the chassis, making cab removal impractical. In those instances, the rear wheels and roller drum need to be removed, and packing these units becomes more complicated as they are then non-runners.

How we pack a roller for shipping

  1. 1

    Verify the dismantling method

As part of our quoting process, we thoroughly review the make and model of the roller you need shipped. From there we work out the dismantling scope required and include that scope of works in our quotation.

  2. 2

Book labour, equipment and vessel space

Like a well-organised orchestra, timing the labour for the dismantling work with the container delivery is paramount. Get it wrong and extra costs are incurred. Our team is well versed in the advance planning needed to complete these project packs.

  3. 3

Dismantle, drain fluids and disconnect batteries

Before the containers are delivered, we partially dismantle the roller and disconnect any associated electrical or hydraulic lines. Open-ended hoses are then bagged and elevated to reduce the chance of leaks.

  4. 4

    Balancing game

The difference in weight between a roller chassis and its detached cab is significant, so the freight must be carefully balanced to comply with local transport rules and shipping requirements.

  5. 5

    Block the drums

Timber chocks are nailed through the floor to stop the drum moving. Because of its circular profile, the smallest movement of the drum can lead to disaster, so restraining it correctly is of the utmost importance.

  6. 6

    Document and seal

The finished pack is photographed and the lashing recorded before the container is sealed and delivered to the terminal.

Roller shipping FAQs

Does a roller fit in a 20 ft container?

Most small tandem rollers up to about 4 t fit a 20’ container once the ROPS is folded. Larger asphalt rollers usually need a 40’ high cube, and single-drum soil compactors generally ship in an open top or on a flat rack.

Can rollers be combined with other machines?

Yes. Trench rollers and small tandem rollers are often loaded with other compact machinery or attachments to make the best use of a container.
